At the Delhi World Book Fair 2016, publishers stalk books for all seasons and all reasons. At Hall No.12, Hindi publishers rubbed shoulders with those who publish books for competitive exams. At a standalone stall, Malayala Manorama had sold over 250 copies of its eponymous Manorama Year Book.

Another stall that was difficult to miss was Pratiyogita Darpan, the monthly magazine for competitive exams. “Covering an array of current issues, the magazine is sought after among candidates preparing for exams to government jobs,” said the cashier, adding, “Our issue dedicated to Indian economy, Panorama Year Book, general knowledge digests and books for the CBSE-Net have been bestsellers at this book fair.”

Fuelling the perception of a growing interest in government jobs among the country’s youth was the fact that Hindi news group Amar Ujala, has come out with an imprint Amar Ujala Education Books whose stall saw major sales of guides for CBSE-Net, important to be able to teach commerce, management, education and the humanities at the university level. That apart, books on general studies for civil services exams and state public service commission exams were a big draw. “The bestseller is our NCERT series, that compiles content from NCERT books from the 6th standard to the 12th, helpful to those taking state PSC and UPSC exams,” said the stall in-charge.

Trueman Books, by Danika Publishing Company, famous for their guides for CBSE-Net and Council of Scientific & Industrial Research UGC-Net, also had a standalone stall. Their guides for CSIR were lapped up by many enthusiasts.

With the country staring at a job squeeze as more than 10 lakh people graduate each year, government jobs clearly hold their own charm for the country’s youth.
