Metro officials said that the exteriors of the station along with its boundary walls, foot overbridges are being painted with different paintings depicting many facets of life. Italian artist Agostino Iacuraci is currently engaged in giving the station an artistic makeover.
“This initiative has been started as part of an association between the Delhi Metro and St+art India Foundation, which is a non-profit organisation promoting street art. It is also currently organising a street art festival in the city,” a Delhi Metro spokesperson said.
“As part of the initiative, St+art India Foundation will paint the Govindpuri station and maintain the artwork for the next five years, after which the artworks may be repainted. The work at Govindpuri Metro station has been commenced as a pilot project. The work was started by the Italian painter on January 21 and the same will be completed by the beginning of next month. Similar projects might also be started at some other Metro stations in the days ahead,” he added.
The Delhi Metro Railway utilises its spaces for the promotion of art and culture. Apart from having a museum inside the Patel Chowk station, the DMRC has installed decorative panels; art works at various stations such as Mandi House, Janpath, ITO, Udyog Bhavan, INA and others.
