A joint front of about a dozen-odd unions of government bodies held a day-long major protest on Wednesday outside chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence, demanding that their long-pending demands, including salaries, be met at the earliest and threatened to hit each and every nook and corner of the city after January 16.
Among the protesters were employees of the city administration, municipal bodies, NDMC and representatives of several social organisations. Led by former legislator Jai Kishen, other leaders present were former Speaker Chaudhary Prem Singh, former MLAs Charan Singh Kandera, Veer Singh Dhingan, Malaramm Gangwal and Brahmpal, local leaders Rajesh Lilothia, Surendra Kumar, Amarish Gautam, Motilal Bokoliya, Baljor Singh, Darshana Ram Kumar and Rajesh Chauhan and Congress chief spokesperson Sharmishtha Mukherjee.
Addressing the protesters, Mr Kishan said that the chief minister was “anti-downtrodden” and was “deliberately disturbing” municipal corporation employees. He wondered why salaries of corporation employees had not been paid for the past three months. “Such a thing had never happened in the regime of the previous government.”
He said the employees have been caught between the ego fight of the Central and Delhi governments and other corporation leaders. He said: “There has been no welfare scheme launched by the Narendra Modi government and Mr Kejriwal for the upliftment of the downtrodden. The Prime Minister is celebrating Babasaheb Ambedkar’s 125th anniversary and running a cleanliness drive but no welfare scheme has been announced for the downtrodden, backward and sanitation workers. Mr Kejriwal has gone two steps further by ignoring the interest of the downtrodden and contractual workers who had voted him to power. The BJP mayors and other leaders in power have also no concern for the problems of workers.”
He said the CM and the MLAs have increased their own salaries but no one was paying attention to the plight and hardships of workers who have not got their salaries for the past three months.
“How will they manage their homes without salary ” he asked.
