Gandhigiri: Violators offered roses by volunteers

Helping traffic police personnel on Friday, AAP volunteers took to streets to offer a rose to offenders of the odd-even scheme. Each time an even-numbered vehicle was flagged down, the offending motorist was offered a rose and some counselling about the rising pollution levels in the national capital.

Gandhigiri was on display at 200 locations in the city, with civil defence volunteers offering roses to those violating odd-even rules being implemented for 15 days to bring down pollution level in the national capital.

The Delhi government has deployed around 10,000 volunteers with roses in their hands across the national capital to request violators to follow odd-even rules, following the Gandhigiri route.

An official said that around 200 volunteers have been deployed along with traffic cops and sub-divisional magistrates in each Assembly segment of the national capital at major red rights.

“There are nine districts in Delhi and each district administration has bought rose stems on its own. The flowers have been given to civil defence volunteers who will offer them to those violating the odd-even rules,” said a senior government official.

At a busy traffic intersection near Noida, a number of Aam Aadmi Party volunteers were assisting Delhi police personnel in keeping a tab on vehicles following the launch of the odd-even scheme on Friday.

There were no police barricades near the Delhi-Noida border in the morning and the volunteers tried to ensure a smooth flow of traffic on the road. The volunteers, however, flagged down a few even-numbered cars and went up to the driver to present a rose, reflecting the Gandhian spirit.

They also counselled the offending motorists to follow the Delhi government’s odd-even plan and asked them to return home. While some vehicle owners followed the instructions, others gave their reasons for not being able to comply with the plan.

Shiv Kumar Sharma, a civil defence volunteer from Geeta Colony circle in east Delhi, said his group was able to persuade some motorists to turn back. “We are here since 7 am. We are giving roses to people and counselling them about the odd-even formula. So far, we have persuaded around a dozen people to turn back,” he said.

“Some people said they were going to hospital or there was an emergency. We did let them go.” The roses were provided by the area district magistrate’s office.
