The North Delhi Municipal Corporation has directed its horticulture department to ensure that there are no hanging or naked electricity wires in any of the civic body’s parks as a preventive measure to save residents from electrocutions.

NDMC commissioner P.K. Gupta has directed the horticulture director to personally visit the parks to implement the order. The order has been issued after a couple of deaths were reported due to electrocution from different parts of the city. The corporation has around 4,500 parks of different sizes under its jurisdiction. A senior official said that the order has been passed as a safety measure looking at the heavy downpour during the past few days.

The civic body observed that open electric wires were scattered at various parks in North Delhi, the revelation came after the corporation carried out inspections in the parks after they received several complaints from Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs). The citizen’s body said that due to open electric wires children and elders were unable to visit the parks.

“The director (horticulture) and officers of horticulture department should personally visit all municipal parks and ensure their proper maintenance, upkeep and ensure that no swings, grills, gates, etc., of parks are in dangerous condition. Further, there should be no hanging or naked electricity wire in any of the parks which may cause electrocution due to rains,” said the order issued by Mr Gupta.

The order said that additional commissioners should also carry out regular field inspections of different areas falling in the zones under their respective supervisory control to monitor the aforesaid tasks and if any discrepancy is noticed in any area it should be removed immediately.

In August, two men had died due to electrocution. In the first case, a 28-year-old man died of electrocution after he accidentally came in contact with a street light adjacent to his house in east Delhi. In the other incident, a 27-year-old man was electrocuted after he accidentally touched a live wire at a plastic factory in Outer Delhi’s Narela.
