The Delhi government has decided to increase the reimbursement by Rs 300 per child to all private schools in the national capital for admissions under the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category from the upcoming academic session. The decision to increase the amount comes after deputy education minister Manish Sisodia received complaints from various private schools against “minimal amount” reimbursed by the government to them for allowing students under EWS category.

“The government presently reimburses a fixed am-ount to private schools in lieu of taking admission of students who belong to this section. However, numerous complaints were rece-ived about the amount bei-ng less,” a senior director-ate of education (DoE) official said. “It has now been decided that the amount will be raised to Rs 1,598 from Rs 1,290,” the official added.

During the ongoing admission for entry-level classes, the government has allotted over 26,600 seats through computerised draws under the EWS category, an experiment that has been introduced by the Delhi government for the first time.

Mr Sisodia after releasing the first computerised data in February had said that the decision to make the draw-of-lots online was taken to make the entire process transparent. “Some of you (private schools) were admitting non-eligible students under the EWS category to favour ministers and officials. But now with technology, we have changed that,” he had said.

Till last year, the government only issued a common form and monitored the draw-of-lots. The rest of the process was managed by the schools. In the online system, however, applicants are allotted seats and the admission process is centralised.

The DoE received 73,059 applications since Febru-ary for the 28,000 seats available under the EWS category for nursery admissions.

The move to install the CCTV cameras has come after 5-year-old student Ankit died after he fell in a septic tank at the SDMC school in Kapashera area on January 27. An amount of '1 lakh will be spent on installation of CCTV cameras in a school. The SDMC has earmarked an amount of '.5 crore for this during financial year 2016-17.
