A 56-year-old woman was murdered and her businessman husband is battling for his life after unidentified assailants attacked them at a park in a posh locality of Outer Delhi’s Prashant Vihar on Sunday evening.
The couple was attacked in a children’s park located barely a few hundred metres from the Prashant Vihar police station. Surrounded by schools, a hospital and posh apartments, the park is frequented by scores of visitors, mostly children, through the day and until late evenings.
The victims, Kanchan Bhutani, and her 60-year-old husband Kulbhushan Rai Bhutani, however, were not regular visitors, DCP (outer) Vikramjit Singh said, based on initial investigation.
The couple’s family members had gone to watch a film when the elderly couple walked out of their duplex flat in Laxmi Kunj Apartments.
CCTV cameras showed the victims leaving their home around 6 pm and visiting a local juice shop before heading to the park, located barely 200 metres from their home. The police said it is unclear what drew them to the park.
The couple took a round of the park before settling down on a bench. Unlike most other parts of the park, the spot where they were attacked is not well-lit, claimed locals.
There were a few people around in the park when the couple was attacked at 8 pm. Investigators believe the assailants approached the couple from behind and attacked their throats with a sharp weapon, possibly a kukri.
The assailants directly went for the victims’ throats and slit them before stabbing the couple in other parts of their bodies.
“The woman died on the spot because of slit throat. The stab wounds on other parts of the victims’ bodies, however, appear superficial in nature,” said a senior investigator.
Kanchan was declared brought dead at the hospital. Her husband was rushed into ICU where he has undergone surgeries to his neck.
He continues to battle for his life and the police has been unable to speak to him.
The victims’ family members are being questioned in a bid to know of any personal enmities involving the victims.
