Eight-km long traffic jam on Gurgaon E-way

The national capital reeled under severe traffic congestion on Monday as heavy rains lashed the city, causing waterlogging on several roads and intersections across the city. On the first working day of the week, commuters had a hard time as vehicular traffic crawled on roads, clogged with long tailbacks, after the city received 15.2 mm rainfall in the second half of the day.

“We received over 150 calls about waterlogging and heavy traffic in different parts of the city. There were over 50 waterlogging points that hampered traffic movement,” said Sandeep Goel, special commissioner of police (traffic). The affected stretches included M.B. Road, Lakshman Public School to RTR flyway, Dhaula Kuan, and Azad Market Chowk.

Traffic in Gurgaon also came to a standstill due to waterlogging resulting in an eight-km jam on Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway on NH-8 and several important intersections.

Hero Honda Chowk, Sohna Road, Manesar, Udyog Vihar, Old Gurgaon Road and Rajeev Chowk witnessed waterlogging and choked traffic movement for almost three hours after heavy rainfall between 3 and 5 pm. “Gurgaon recorded 4 mm rains. Najafgarh drain was overflowing. Waterlogging was reported at Hero Honda chowk resulting in long vehicular pile up at the entire stretch of National Highway-8,” Gurgaon deputy commissioner T.L. Satyaprakash said.

He said senior police, district administration and National Highways Authority of India officials assisted to ease the traffic movement by 8 pm.

People and office-goers returning to and from Gurgaon took to social media to share traffic woes.
