Following protests in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) after a student went missing, the JNU administration on Monday clarified that they are taking all necessary steps to look into the concerned matter.

According to an official statement by the university administration, when the inter-hall administration (IHA) received the complaint of a physical violence involving a student of Mahi-Mandavi hostel on October 14, they immediately acted on it.

A student of the school of biotechnology and an AISA activist, Najeeb Ahmed, allegedly went missing on Sunday following a brawl on the campus on Saturday night.

“Wardens of the hostel met and discussed all the issues related to the incidence with the students present, including the hostel president, JNUSU president, and the room-mate of the accused. The matter was resolved that night and a decision was taken on disciplinary measures,” the statement said.

The JNUSU, along with some student representatives, had even met the Rector-I and DOS at Rector-I office on Sunday and discussed the incident, and were assured of a speedy inquiry. An AISA activist said that Najeeb had an altercation with some ABVP activists on Saturday night when they were holding a door-to-door campaign at the hostel for the mess committee election.

Najeeb allegedly slapped a student following which residents of the hostel asked him to vacate his room. “It all started with a scuffle between two groups of students, but then an entire group of ABVP activists came to avenge it and beat him up,” the activist said. ABVP on the other hand, denied any such allegations. However, the parents of the accused student also lodged an FIR at Vasant Kunj (north) police station the same day claiming their son to be missing from the hostel.

While JNU student union president Mohit Kumar Pandey alleged the administration of not taking the matter seriously, the varsity assured that it is in constant touch with the police to facilitate the investigation. “After the incident was reported, JNU security was instructed to immediately look for the missing student. The DOS even gave a written instruction to all the wardens to search the hostel rooms. Also, the police visited the campus and investigated the matter, which is still ongoing,” the statement further added.

Meanwhile, JNUSU has demanded to strictly punish all those involved in the alleged group violence. “The administration must file a formal complaint with the Delhi police immediately. All the accused have to be declared out of bounds from the hostel,” JNUSU said in an statement.
