In a bid to encourage education of girls, cash-strapped East Delhi Municipal Corporation has decided to offer a rebate of eight per cent to the parents of a girl child if their ward is studying in any school run by the East Corporation on property tax and an additional five per cent rebate to those who are parenting only a girl child.

The civic body has also decided to distribute free school bags to all students studying in municipal schools along with uniform, books and note-books.

Announcing the budget for the financial year 2016-2017, EDMC standing committee chairperson Lata Gupta said, “For the coming year, the civic agency has focused on girl child and women, seeking to empower both.”

To motivate the women, the corporation has decided to outsource the maintenance of toilet complexes to women, who would also look after and develop kiosks in the neighbourhood for their livelihood.

Meanwhile, to inculcate healthy habits among students of municipality-run schools, the civic agency will also distribute toothbrushes and toothpastes.

The civic agency has also decided to put a blanket ban on illegal slaughtering, and those found flouting the rules would have to pay heavy fines which the corporation is mulling to increase manifold. “The civic body would take stringent action against those found flouting rules and would also levy heavy fine money,” said Ms Gupta.

After the city held grand celebrations to mark the International Yoga Day, the civic body is also keen to promote yoga in its schools, under their physical education project. “Each municipal school will have a yoga instructor. The schools would hold these classes on alternate days, sharing the yoga staff,” said Ms Gupta.

The trifurcation of the erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Delhi, which was done with an aim to improve administration and boost functioning in the city, has left civic agencies reeling under financial losses and the most effected was the East Delhi Municipal Corporation reeling under heavy debt. The corporations have not been able to give pensions to widows, old people and handicapped for the past many months.
