DTC may ply luxury AC buses
In a bid to encourage elites to switch to public transport and inculcate a change in the mindset, the Delhi government has proposed to start a premium bus service, with higher fares. According to the plan, Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) may run air-conditioned premium buses for those who can afford higher fares.
“The Delhi government will launch the premium bus service for elite class, most of whom use their cars to commute as of now. The fares of this service will be higher in comparison to normal bus service. These buses will ply only on selected routes where elites reside and work. They can also book seats in these buses online,” Delhi transport minister Gopal Rai said.
Mr Rai added that first-class facility will be provided in the premium bus service being launched to cater to higher-income groups. “We have started working on premium bus service and the government will soon launch it. This will be first of its kind bus service we will be providing to those who can afford higher fares,” the transport minister added.
After launch of the service, elites can use premium bus service by spending more money, he said. Last week, the Supreme Court had asked the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to explore the possibility of providing premium service where passengers can book seats in Metro by paying five-six times more than the normal fare.
