Domestic violence case: AAP MLA appears before DCW

AAP MLA Manoj Kumar on Tuesday appeared before the Delhi Commission for Women in connection with a domestic violence case filed against him.

AAP MLA Manoj Kumar on Tuesday appeared before the Delhi Commission for Women in connection with a domestic violence case filed against him.

DCW chief Swati Maliwal said a summon was sent to Mr Kumar on Saturday after his wife approached the commission, alleging that she was beaten and abused by her husband. AAP MLA and former Delhi law minister Somnath Bharti also faced similar charges of domestic violence.

The Kondli MLA’s wife lodged the complaint with the DCW a few weeks ago. She alleged that she was beaten and abused on several occasions and she was made to leave the house two years ago.

There is also a feud between the couple over custody of their child.

Both Mr Kumar and his wife were questioned by the DCW on Monday for the first time.

“DCW doesn’t different between a neta and an aam aadmi. That’s why the MLA was summoned,” Ms Maliwal said, refusing to divulge details on the case.

“It’s not just about this case. DCW takes action in all cases,” she told reporters when asked what sort of action is expected against Mr Kumar. She added that “action will be taken as per law.”

Ms Maliwal said the next day of hearing will be decided later.

It’s not the first time the AAP MLA has landed in trouble.

Last year, he faced arrest in a case of cheating and land-grabbing. The Aam Aadmi Party had then defended him, saying the case against him was politically motivated.
