Doing away with guest teachers unjust: BJP

Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Vijender Gupta on Wednesday demanded that the Delhi government must restore with immediate effect the services of more than 3,000 guest teachers recently done away with.

Mr Gupta stressed that their services should be regularised as promised by chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on the eve of the Assembly elections and at various forums subsequently.

“The shortage of 20,000 teachers is already adversely affecting the education standards of the Delhi government schools. There is no possibility of filling up of vacant posts of teachers in the near future. The impact of shortage is likely to deepen further when the services of guest teachers are not available,” said Mr Gupta.

The BJP MLA said the Delhi government has done away with the services of the guest teachers with effect from April 1. “There is no logical reason behind termination of the services of these teachers. The chief minister and the deputy chief minister have not bothered to meet the agitating teachers,” he added.

Pointing out that the deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, who is also the city education minister, had informed the Delhi Assembly that the Directorate of Education has finalised the process of recruitment of 9,623 teachers, the Leader of Opposition said that the process of recruitment is going to take a long time.

“In the absence of guest teachers, the education of children will be affected. Only continuation of the services of guest teachers can retrieve the worrying scenario,” Mr Gupta added.
