After nearly a decade, the Delhi University has decided to add 2,000 more undergraduate seats in various courses from this academic session.
“The last time additional seats were added in the DU was in 2007-08. Since then, even though the number of applicants has steadily increased, additional seats haven’t been added. We met the vice-chancellor and asked him to issue a notification regarding courses that have already been approved, and to conduct a meeting of the councils as soon as possible so that more courses can be added,” DU executive council member A.K. Bhagi said.
The university has already written to 19 colleges to begin courses that the academic and executive council had approved for the last year, but for some reason they were not started.
Nachiketa Singh, a member of the academic council (AC) and part of the standing committee, said, “Nineteen colleges have already received the requisite approval to start 35 new courses from this year. And as soon as these courses start in particular colleges, there will also be addition of 2,000 new undergraduate seats.”
The new courses include mathematics (Hons) in Gargi College and Delhi College of Arts and Commerce, political science (Hons) at St. Stephen’s College and sociology (Hons) in Indraprastha College for Women. Aryabhatta College will have computer science (Hons), history, psychology and mathematics (Hons) and sociology (Hons) in Indraprastha College for Women.
Other educational institutions, including Bharti College, Ramanujan College and Daulat Ram College, may also add a few new courses. Recently, the university decided to grant 32 seats each for science courses followed by 40 seats each for arts. S.G.T.B. Khalsa College will also introduce one new course — B.Sc. in forensic science.
For now, the university has 54,000 seats in 61 colleges. The Delhi University admission process begins on May 24.
