In attempt to encourage research scholars to know more about the various aspects of Northeast, the Delhi University will soon launch a North East India Studies Programme. The fully-funded research programme is likely to start from the next academic session.

According to a senior DU official, associated with the programme, concerns have been raised in the past about various issues of Northeastern states and that there is not enough understanding about the areas and the people, not just among laymen but also intellectuals. “Also, there is lack of research. Hence, we decided to develop this programme,” NEISP convenor Kamei Aphun said.

The NEISP, which has been approved by the department of sociology’s council, is yet to be placed before varsity’s Academic Council, following which it will be officially introduced. “Meanwhile, we are working on a vision document which will be presented to the UGC to seek its support. A five-member committee has been established in the department to take care of that aspect,” Mr Aphun said.

The varsity is also planning to include syllabi on the N-E studies in its M.A. and M.Phil programmes.
