Despite various gender-affirmative measures, the national capital has shown just a marginal increase in the sex ratio at birth from 896 females per 1,000 males in 2014 to 898 in 2015, revealed a report released by the Delhi government on Wednesday.
This is the case despite the increase in total number of births registered in Delhi from 373,693 in 2014 to 374,012 in 2015. The figures were revealed by the annual report, released by deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, on registration of births and deaths in Delhi for 2015 prepared by the Directorate of Economics and Statistics.
“The average number of births per day works out to 1,025 in 2015 as compared to 1,024 in 2014. Out of total births registered, 1.97 lakh (52.7 per cent) are male and 1.77 lakh (47.3 per cent) are female. The birth rate reduced from 20.9 per 1,000 population in 2014 to 20.5 in 2015. Out of total registered births in Delhi, 34.99 per cent were registered in North DMC, 31.80 per cent in South DMC, 20.35 per cent in East DMC, 11.92 per cent in NDMC and 0.94 per cent in Cantonment Board Area,” Mr Sisodia said.
The deputy chief minister added that the institutional births in Delhi increased from 81.75 per cent in 2013 to 82.83 per cent in 2014 and then 84.41 per cent in 2015. “Out of 3.16 lakh institutional births, about 2.12 lakh (67.2 per cent) births took place in the government hospitals last year as compared to 2.06 lakh (66.4 per cent) births in 2014,” he said.
The annual report noted that the age group of the mothers at the time of delivery in maximum (43.97 per cent) cases was 20-24 years, followed by 38 per cent cases in 25-29 years group and in 15.3 per cent cases the age of mother was more than 30 years. In some more good news, the deputy CM said that the Infant Mortality Rate decreased from 25 per 1,000 live births in 2012 to 24 in 2013 and then 20 in 2014 as per sample registration system.
He also pointed out that the total number of deaths registered in Delhi during 2015 were 1.25 lakh as compared to 1.21 lakh in 2014. “Average number of deaths registered per day in Delhi works out to 341 in 2015. About 62.7 per cent of the total deaths are reported by the hospitals and remaining 37.3 per cent are the domiciliary deaths,” Mr Sisodia said. The report also revealed that the average number of births per day in Delhi during 2015 is 1,025 and average number of deaths per day is 341. “Thus, the net natural increase in population of Delhi is 684 per day and 2.50 lakh in a year. The remaining increase in the population of Delhi is due to migration,” it said.
