In a bid to avoid traffic congestion due to existing low-floor buses and meet the shortage of public transport buses, the Delhi government has planned to run over 1,000 feeder buses on the city’s narrow roads. City transport minister Satyendar Jain said the AAP government was contemplating running new feeder buses on the routes, which would be operated by the Delhi Transport Corporation.

“We have studied that when the low-floor buses, which are large in size, run on roads that are 60 feet wide, or less, they occupy most of the space and lead to traffic issues. Keeping this in mind, we have chalked out a plan to run feeder buses on such roads,” Mr Jain said.

The feeder buses will also help meet the shortage of public transport on routes where fewer passengers use low-floor buses. “There are several routes where, except for morning and evening rush hours, the DTC’s low-floor buses ferry fewer number of passengers, causing loss of revenue to the government. Feeder buses will be run on these routes,” the minister said.

Mr Jain said in the next five or six months, every service of the department — issuance of driving licence, registration of vehicles, or permits — will go online as part of the e-authority project. He has directed senior officials to prepare a detailed plan to bring all services online.
