In a move aimed at encouraging its tax collection, the Aam Aaadmi Party-led Delhi government launched a mobile app through which city traders can register themselves with the VAT department of Delhi government. According to the government, through the ‘DVAT M SEWA’ app, traders won’t be required to submit application for registration at the department’s office and all they have to do now is to fill the form online. There is also no need for VAT inspector’s visit at their business premises.

The application, which was launched by Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, ensures VAT registration of a trader within 24 hours of filing the request. “We have finished ‘inspector raj’ by introducing several initiatives to benefit traders,” he had said.

He claimed that BJP is not the party of traders but it is AAP which takes care of them even after coming to power. “In the past one year, we have taken several decisions for the welfare of traders that include ending of inspector raj and reduction of VAT rates on several things. Traders, who were under the impression that BJP was supporting them, have now realised that BJP was just seeking their votes. AAP is the only political party that takes care of traders even after coming to power,” Mr Kejriwal had said.

VAT commissioner SS Yadav said that the ‘DVAT M SEWA’ mobile app will ensure ease of doing business in Delhi. “Due to this app, the VAT inspector’s visit at a trader’s business premises will not be required, instead, they will have to upload a picture of their business premises in the app only,” he added.

In a bid to check tax evasions, the government has also decided to rope in the market associations across the city for collecting VAT.

The city government will then offer them 10 per cent share in the revenue collected if the collection exceeds the target. The department of trade and taxes has come up with this innovative scheme named “market associations reward scheme.”
