The Delhi police has been instructed by a Delhi court to file an action-taken report (ATR) on a plea seeking lodging a case against JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar and other students for allegedly raising anti-Brahmin slogans and setting on fire a copy of ancient socio-religious test of Manusmriti.

The court after directing the police to file an action-taken report, fixed June 1 as the next date of hearing. Ajay Gautam, a social worker, had filed a complaint before the court seeking lodging an FIR against Mr Kumar and others for insulting Brahmins and ancient Hindu text, Manusmriti.

Mr Gautam told the court that he, being a Brahmin, felt offended after watching a video of the JNUSU president on YouTube, in which Mr Kumar was raising anti-Brahmin and anti-Hindu slogans.

“I have fundamental right to practice any religion, faith under the constitution and no one can say he wants freedom from one caste or other. On March 8, Kumar also burnt the copies of Manusmriti. He has insulted Brahmin, Hindu and have offended me,” Mr Gautam argued.

He urged the court to direct the police to file the action-taken report, saying the acts of the accused persons were highly illegal, unjustified, actionable and un-ignorable and they were liable to be punished under the law.

“The complainant further submits that the complainant is put to lot of trouble and mental agony after seeking the images/videos/news and comments made by the accused persons.”
