Ram Lal Anand College on Monday had witnessed an altercation between two groups of students when former DU professor G.N. Saibaba went to the college to submit some documents.

While one group was protesting against the reinstatement of Mr Saibaba as a professor again in the college, the other group of students was supporting him.

“A police team deployed at the college reported the matter to the PCR team patrolling the Delhi University’s South Campus area and soon officials from the South Campus police station visited the spot,” a senior official said.

English professor at Ram Lal Anand College, Mr Saibaba was suspended from the Delhi University following his arrest regarding alleged Maoist links. However, his request for reinstatement in the college led to an agitation between a section of students and the university teachers.

In order to maintain the law and order and decorum in the campus, the Delhi police and college authorities had convinced both the groups. Mr Saibaba came to the college to submit some documents. He even went to the staff room and later left safely, the official said.

“The crowd dispersed after the confrontation which did not last long and no student was detained,” the senior official added.

While some members of the Delhi University Teachers’ Association are supporting the 88 per cent disabled professor on the issue of reinstatement, a group of students led by members of the ABVP has been continuously opposing his reinstatement.
