Statues of freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were unveiled in the Delhi Assembly complex by chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Shaheed Divas, the martyrdom day of the three heroes. The statues of the three freedom fighters have been erected for the first time inside any Assembly complex in the country.

The statues were unveiled amidst the slogans of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” and “Inqulab Zindabad.”

“Ironically, the ceremony will take place at one of the earliest seats of the British crown in Delhi, when the Civil Lines area was established and served as a location where judgments were passed on revolutionaries with many of them being awarded the death penalty,” said an official.

The DU also open the room in the Viceregal Lodge, that currently houses the office of the varsity vice-chancellor, where Bhagat Singh was reportedly imprisoned for a day during his trial. Around 100 students from five different schools were invited for the first guided tour of resource materials and to visit the room in the lodge, handed over to the university in 1933, that housed works on and by Bhagat Singh.

The resource centre on Bhagat Singh for students, historians and research scholars has compilations of handwritten letters by the freedom fighter on display.
