The body of an unidentified woman in her mid-20s was found in a decomposed state inside a house in Central Delhi’s Paharganj area on Friday.

After locals complained of a stench emanating from a house in Ramchandra Gali, a search of the premises led to the discovery of the body inside a rented accommodation on the third floor which was locked from outside, the police said. The room was recently rented out to a couple.

The police team broke the lock of the room and found the woman dead on the floor. The woman had a deep cut on her back, suggesting she was attacked by a blunt object.

An investigating officer said that the woman had taken the room on rent three days ago. A man who was accompanying her had spoken to the landlord and introduced her as his wife. He had promised the landlord to submit his identity proof after Holi. The police said that it appears the woman was murdered two-three days ago as the body was found in a decomposed state. Police sources said they are looking at the CCTV footage of the nearby hotels and taking help from the owner to identify the man, who had accompanied the deceased woman.

The police has registered a case of murder and begun an inquiry into the matter. The cause of death is yet to be ascertained, they said. Mean-while, after no locals and neither the landlord could identify the woman, the police booked a case against the latter for non-compliance with tenant verification rules.
