A 28-year-old construction worker was electrocuted and his co-worker suffered electric shocks when they came in contact with a high tension wire in the southeast Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh area. The police said that the daily wage labourers were working in a balcony of an under-construction house when the incident took place.
A 220KV power line passed through the roof of the building where Bhura and Intihaar were fitting tiles in the balcony. “Bhura and Intihaar were working in the balcony with only a few metres away from the high tension wire. They came in contact with the wire while operating a tiles-cutting machine,” said a senior police officer. The police added that Bhura died on the spot while Intihaar was later admitted to Safdarjung Hospital.
Locals said initially it looked like a cylinder blast as there was a loud sound of explosion. “When we reached the sport, we found two men lying on the rooftop,” said Mohammed Hafeez, a local resident.
A case of criminal negligence has been registered at Jamia Nagar police station. The police said it will also question the owner of the building. There has been several similar cases in the past in the same area but the authorities claim that the power line was installed in accordance with the law.
