The crime branch of the Delhi police on Thursday busted a gang of auto-thefts who would, after stealing the vehicles, dismantle them and sell them in sell them off at the scrap market in west Delhi to avoid detection. As many as 17 vehicles, the police said, have been recovered from their possession, including 15 two-wheelers and two cars.

According to the police, the arrested accused have been identified as Avtar Singh (24) and Arif alias Raju (30).

The accused dismantled vehicles instead of reselling them to avoid getting detected by the police. They had allegedly set up a garage at west Delhi’s Mundka area for the purpose and were selling the scraps at Rs 13 per kg, making about Rs 20,000 on selling a car, sources said. The duo had met in jail and started their gang after being released on bail.

Joint commissioner of police (crime branch) Ravindra Yadav said that on a tip-off, a team was constituted and the garage was raided. Both the accused were arrested from there, said the cops. At least 15 motorcycles, two scooties and one car were found lying dismantled from the garage.

On interrogation, the JCP said, the accused disclosed that they stole all vehicles from west Delhi areas like Tilak Nagar, Vikaspuri, Rajouri Garden and Hari Nagar. “They further disclosed that they have hired the garage on rent and used to dispose off the stolen vehicles after dismantling them and converting them into scraps to avoid detection,” said the JCP, adding that “the arrested accused disclosed that they used to sell the scrap in Mayapuri market to dealers at the rate of Rs 13 per kg. The scrap of one medium car is usually weights about 1,300 kg whereas that of a big car is about 1,800 kg.”

Mr Yadav added that Arif has been recently released on bail in a murder case committed in Ranhola whereas Avtar Singh is on bail in motor vehicle theft cases. After release on bail, they started stealing motor vehicles to earn money. Further investigations are on, added the cops.
