Cop team to visit minor convicts’ hometowns

Two days after 10 juveniles escaped from the David Sassoon Industrial and Reformatory Institution at Matunga, the police is now forming a team to visit the hometowns of the missing boys. Sources said the police was contacting the families of the boys to check if they had been contacted.

“Two of the juveniles are from Pune and one from Jalna. We suspect that they may head back to their hometowns,” said a police source from Shivaji Park police station, which is investigating the case. He added that they were still collecting documents from the correctional home to help with the background of the boys.

On Thursday night, 10 minors escaped from the correctional home by cutting three rods of the dormitory they were put in. This dormitory located on the first floor only housed these 10 children, as they had been regularly creating problems for the other inmates.

Sources revealed that the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB) had convicted the juveniles for serious offences. “They belonged to different cities and had been housed here after conviction. One of them, considered the leader of the gang, had been convicted of murder in Pune,” said a police source. “We have started making enquiries in Pune and the hometowns of the juveniles. We strongly suspect that they are no longer in the city and will head back to their homes. Once we have a confirmation, we will send a team to their cities to bring them back,” he said.

The juveniles had been brought home early this year and were to be inmates for about two years.
