The Uttar Pradesh police said Akhtar Khan (40) was leading a team of 12 policemen in a raid on a hideout of criminals Fukran and Javed at Nai Abadi area of Dadri. The deceased was in-charge of local police post and had been given a tip that wanted criminal Sultan was hiding at the house in Dadri that was under his jurisdiction. Khan was the first to enter the house where the criminals were hiding.

“As soon as he stepped into the house, the criminals hiding there indiscriminately opened fire on the police party. Khan was shot in the neck and collapsed on the spot. The raiding party took cover and fired retaliatory shots, but the suspects managed to flee from the back door of the house,” said a senior police officer.

“Policemen at the spot rushed the injured sub-inspector to the Dadri government hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival,” said Anurag Singh, deputy superintendent of police, Dadri.

Khan, who joined the force in 1998 as a constable, was posted as in-charge of Kot police post in Dadri. Hailing from Aligarh, he had cleared the internal exams to become a sub-inspector.

His family was informed about the incident. Deputy inspector-general (Meerut Range) Laxmi Singh arrived the city following the incident and took over the charge of investigation. “We have registered a case against five persons and multiple teams have been formed to arrest the suspects,” said Mr Singh.

Khan’s body has been sent for a post-mortem and will be handed over to his family soon. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Wahid, brother of the deceased officer, alleged that when his brother was hit by a bullet fired by criminals, all of the policemen in raiding team fled from the spot, leaving his brother to die. However, the police has denied the charge. Khan’s family have also decided not to conduct his last rites till the criminals involved in his murder are arrested. “Unless the killers are arrested, we will not conduct the last rites,” Khan’s elder brother Wahid said.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Monday announced Rs 20 lakh compensation for kin of the sub-inspector.
