A 49-year-old Delhi police head constable died after being run over by a truck in North Delhi’s Timarpur area on Friday. According to the police, the deceased has been identified as Abdul Sabbur Khan.

The truck driver in a bid to avoid a check point ran over Abdul, said a police officer. The incident took place around 1.30 am at the Gopalpur red light where Khan, along with a sub-inspector, had placed a barricade to stop and check vehicles.

Just when they had cleared a car, the driver of the truck, Dheer Singh, in a bid to avoid the check point ran over Abdul. In the meantime, a passerby, Dheeraj Tyagi, chased the truck in his car and stopped the vehicle near Majnu ka Tila. However, the driver managed to flee.

The police later arrested Dheer Singh from Tigri village in Malviya Nagar early Friday morning.

“We immediately went on a search for Dheer Singh and finally apprehended him from the house of the truck owner. Initially he was lying that he was not driving the truck, but later he confessed to the crime,” said DCP (North district) Madhur Verma, adding, “We arrested him under Section 304 of the IPC at the Timarpur police station.”
