Cop accused of abetting suicide gets bail

Former Delhi police SHO Dinesh Kumar, accused of abetting a 25-year-old woman to commit suicide, was on Saturday released on bail by a Delhi court.

Former Delhi police SHO Dinesh Kumar, accused of abetting a 25-year-old woman to commit suicide, was on Saturday released on bail by a Delhi court. Additional sessions judge Rajiv Mehra directed Mr Kumar to furnish a bail bond of Rs 50,000 and a surety of like amount.

R.N. Vats, who was appearing for Mr Kumar, had argued that his client was falsely implicated by the deceased who was in a league with one Ram Niwas, a vagabond of the outer district.

“Ram Niwas was with the deceased when she committed suicide. She was not literate, then who wrote her suicide note. She was called for questioning on 20 April while she committed suicide on April 29. This indicates conspiracy behind the incident,” Mr Vats argued.

The court, after hearing the submission, noted that the prosecution had said that one person was found standing near the deceased at the time of the incident but his identity was yet to be established.

“The facts shows that the accused has been falsely implicated and it would be more appropriate to allow the application and release the applicant on bail,” the court noted.

On Friday, Mr Vats, had told the court that his client was about to be promoted as an ACP and there was no case lodged against him during his tenure of 29 years. He had argued that Mr Dinesh was arrested in a hurry. The court had reserved its order for Saturday after hearing his submission.

According to the prosecution, on April 29, Rekha alias Tanu had committed suicide outside the Tis Hazari court premises. She was rushed to a hospital where she succumbed during the course of treatment. The doctors attending to her handed over a suicide note and a five pages complaint to the police in which she had mentioned that she was taking the extreme step because of the Vijay Vihar police station SHO.

A case in this respect under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of IPC was lodged with the Sabji Mandi police station and Mr Dinesh was arrested. Later he was dismissed by senior police officials.
