In an attempt to ensure at least one teacher for Sanskrit, Punjabi and Urdu in every public school, the Delhi government on Friday approved 769 and 610 posts of trained graduate teachers for Punjabi and Urdu languages, respectively. The decision was taken in a Cabinet meeting headed by chief minister Arvind Kejriwal.

At present, out of the total 1,024 government schools, Sanskrit is being taught in about 98 per cent schools, Punjabi in about 24 per cent schools and Urdu in about 25 per cent schools, an official statement said. Up to Class 8, three languages are being taught, while two in 9th and 10th standards.

“In the academic year 2015-16, 28,612 students opted for Punjabi language and 82,341 opted for Urdu at the time of admission. The present position is that up to Class 8 three languages are being taught, and in 9th and 10th standards, only two languages are taught. The Delhi Education Act, 1973, vide Rule-9 provides for the ‘Three Language Formula’ in the teaching of languages in Class 6–10, the language formula, as adopted by the Central government, shall be followed,” the statement said.

In the meeting, it was also decided to form a Society for Excellence in Education to devise systems and approaches for improving and sustaining quality in education with emphasis on character building and personality. The government wants to provide the facility at least one such language teacher in each school so that students are not discouraged from opting Punjabi and Urdu languages, it added.
