Cave-in leads to massive traffic snarls

Central Delhi witnessed severe traffic snarls on Tuesday due to massive road cave-in at Pragati Maidan Gate 1 on Bhairon Marg on Monday afternoon. The traffic snarls were seen across central Delhi on Tuesday morning during the rush hour.

Commuters will get some relief only after Holi festival as it would take at least four days to allow traffic on the road, Delhi traffic police said.

“Oncoming traffic from Ring Road was diverted to Mathura Road on Bhairon Marg and traffic congestion was reported around this area, including ITO and W Point. We had a meeting with Delhi Jal Board officials over traffic management in the area due to the cave-in. We have requested them to fix the leakage at the earliest to resume normal traffic on the stretch,” said Mr Muktesh Chander, special commissioner (traffic).

Traffic police constables on the spot, where road had caved in, said that the Delhi Jal Board staff had been working since Sunday. The repaired patch, however, collapsed again at 2.30 pm on Monday, hours after the road was filled in. On Tuesday, the traffic snarls in and around ITO and Ring Road stretch near Sarai Kale Khan started with the morning rush hour and became massive by 12 pm, throwing traffic out of gear. Soon, long tailbacks were also witnessed on Vikas Marg and arterial roads in central Delhi.

“It will take at least four days to resume normal flow of traffic on the road where the cave-in was reported. More traffic personnel have been deployed on diverted roads for traffic management,” said Mr Chander.

Traffic cops said that they had put up barricades at the entrance of the road on Sunday and even light vehicles were not allowed to enter.
