Within two days of the Delhi government announcing the list of vehicles exempted from the even-odd formula to combat rising pollution in the national capital, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has requested the Delhi government to consider exempting doctors during the 15-day trial period starting January.

The IMA urged the Delhi government to consider exempting doctors from the alternate even-odd formula and requested that doctors who wear aprons and are travelling for work should be exempted under the proposed plan. “Doctors who are going for work should be exempted,” said the IMA.

In the present system, only women driving alone, or with other women or with children under 12 years, are exempted. Senior citizens are also not exempted. “Special status should be given to all above the age of 65 years and driving alone,” the IMA added.

The Indian Medical Association also suggested that the government consider different office timings. “Different office timings, like from 8 am to 4 pm or 10 am to 6 pm will help in not only controlling peak-hour traffic but also bring down pollution level in the city.” “This can be used as a platform for building on the success of the odd-even formula,” it said.
