On the day he was to get engaged to his girlfriend, a 24-year-old businessman was killed after the BMW he was driving rammed into the grille of a flyover, flung in the air, and turned turtle. The incident was reported from southeast Delhi’s Nizamuddin area early Saturday morning.
Abhijit Singh, a builder, was returning from his bachelor’s party around 5 am. He was on his way to his home in Majlis Park, Model Town from Defence Colony, when he lost control over the vehicle and rammed into the grille of the flyover near Lodhi Colony. The hit was such that his car was flung in the air, toppled, and dragged for 50 metres before coming to a halt. The car’s roof was severely damaged and the doors were jammed.
A passerby saw the accident and rushed to save him. Reportedly, he cut the seat belt and pulled Singh out. He was rushed to Moolchand hospital and admitted for treatment. The former also informed the police.
Singh, who was admitted in the intensive care unit, could not survive and succumbed to his injuries later in the day. “He sustained severe head injuries that caused internal bleeding. We have sent the body for post-mortem examination to ascertain the cause of death. We have also initiated an inquiry into the case,” a senior police officer said.
Singh’s family was in shock and refused to speak to the media. “Singh’s father, a builder, had been preparing for his son’s engagement. Even though he had asked Singh to be at home, a day before the engagement, he had insisted to go and party with his friends,” the police said.
It is still unclear if Singh was driving under the influence of alcohol. “The car was definitely speeding. It appears that Singh wanted to take the flyover, but instead of going towards the right, the car veered left and he could not control the steering. He tried to cut to his right, but it was too late and the car rammed into the grille on the left and slid,” the senior police officer said.
