A nine-year-old boy was killed in southwest Delhi’s Chawla area on Thursday afternoon after his bicycle was allegedly hit by a car driven by an assistant professor of the Delhi University.

The accused has been identified as Anupama Aggarwal, an assistant professor in the Delhi University’s Bhagini Nivedita College, according to a senior police official. She was heading home in Jaffarpur Kalan, where the college is situated, at the time of the accident.

The deceased boy has been identified as nine-year-old Nitesh.

“The professor was allegedly talking on her cellphone while driving when suddenly the boy, who was riding a bicycle, came in front of her. Unable to control her car, she rammed into the boy and crushed him under her car,” said the police official.

Shocked by the accident, the professor got out of her car and immediately took the boy, who was unconscious and bleeding profusely, to a nearby hospital, but the doctors declared him dead.

“The woman then went to the Chawla police station and herself told the police about the incident and confessed to committing the crime,” said the official.

An FIR under Sections 279 (rash driving) and 304 A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC was lodged at the Chhawla police station.

After the woman informed the police, a team of cops went to the hospital to send the boy’s body for post-mortem. The family of the deceased was informed immediately.

“We have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and have started further investigations in the matter,” said the police.

The professor was arrested and later given bail at the police station, said the officer.

An eyewitness claimed that the accused driver was on phone when her car hit the boy on the bicycle. The police said that it is investigating the matter with all angles.

The boy lived with his family at Roshanpura and his father Mukesh worked as a labourer, the police officer said.
