BJP: No mechanism to address cases

Following the death of the University lab attendant, who passed away on Monday morning in a hospital succumbing to burn injuries, the BJP came down heavily upon the Delhi government and said that there is no effective mechanism for redressal of cases of sexual harassment faced by women in Delhi despite tall claims made by both the Congress government of Delhi and the Congress-led UPA government of the Centre.

BJP leader Vijay Jolly and former Delhi mayor Aarti Mehra, who had met the victim on Sunday, had also questioned why Delhi chief minister and the education minister had not cared to visit the victim. Alleging nothing has changed in the city even after the December 16 gangrape, Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel accused the Centre of “not making functional the Nirbhaya Fund” created after the brutal incident. “The ministries at the Centre have been fighting to have a control of the corpus of '1,000 crore. This shows that the government is not serious in its intent to address the safety concerns of women. The government is paying only lip service in ensuring the safety of women,” he alleged. Meanwhile, National Commission for Woman chairperson Mamta Sharma said that if sexual harassment is taking place in schools and colleges, then it is very unfortunate. “The case has not yet been reported to us. I will get it probed once it comes to us,” she said. Former Delhi BJP president Vijender Gupta also alleged that the incident “showed” lack of concern of Dikshit’s government towards victims of sexual harassment. Mr Goel further informed, “Delhi has seen almost 240 per cent rise in rape cases, 495 per cent rise in molestation cases and 700 per cent rise in the cases of eve-teasing this year. This shows that nothing has changed on the ground in Delhi even ten months after the Nirbhaya incident.”
