BJP leaders join teachers in protest against government
Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Vijender Gupta, along with 2,500 contractual teachers whose services were terminated from April 1, demonstrated and staged a sit-in protest outside chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence on Monday.
Mr Gupta claimed that these teachers were recruited years back under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and had been recently served termination notice. “They were informed by the Delhi government that they were disengaged due to non-continuation of the posts by the ministry of human resource development,” Mr Gupta said. BJP MLAs Om Prakash Sharma and Jagdish Pradhan also participated in the protest.
The Leader of the Opposition and BJP MLAs, along with the teachers, also met lieutenant-governor Najeeb Jung and submitted a memorandum detailing how the Delhi government had done away with the services of teachers just because they were working under the Centre-sponsored scheme.
Mr Gupta informed that due to the termination of services of contractual teachers under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, nearly 2.5 lakhs students were being denied education. He pointed out that in place of discontinuing the services of contractual teachers under the scheme, the Central government had agreed to release 100 per cent fund for the scheme.
The BJP delegation urged Mr Jung to impress upon the Delhi government to take back the services of 2,500 teachers.
