In attempt to pressurise the Delhi government to table the Fourth Finance Commission’s report, the Delhi BJP has decided to stage demonstrations during the forthcoming Assembly session against the injustice to the municipal corporations by the city government. The Delhi BJP said that it was quite surprising that the Arvind Kejriwal government, which came to power on the promise of “Swaraj-Lokpal” to the people of the national capital, was now avoiding Lokpal and trying to stall the report of the Fourth Finance Commission to paralyse the municipal corporations which are the symbols of Swaraj.

“According to the recommendation of the Fourth Finance Commission, 14 per cent of the total revenue of the Delhi government should be given to the municipal corporations. Mr Kejriwal used to talk about Swaraj in which 20 per cent of the revenue was to be paid to the municipal corporations, but the government is no doing anything to strengthen the civic bodies,” Delhi BJP leaders said.

Delhi BJP president Satish Upadhyay alleged that the Kejriwal government was trying to paralyse the municipal corporations due to political ill-will just like the previous Congress government and trying to prove before the people that these corporations are incompetent.

“On one hand the Delhi government is wasting crores of rupees on the publicity of small issues and on the other it is avoiding to provide economic assistance to the municipal corporations for social schemes like pension to the senior citizens and handicapped persons, sanitation in the city and other services,” Mr Upadhyay said.

Through the demonstrations, the Delhi BJP will try to create pressure on the Delhi government to strengthen the economic condition of the municipal corporations, implementing the report of the Fourth Finance Commission. Mr Upadhyay, Leader of the Opposition Vijender Gupta and state general secretary and Lok Sabha member from South Delhi Ramesh Bidhuri, along with the leaders of all the three municipal corporations, announced the party’s proposed demonstration.

Mr Gupta said that BJP will raise the voice of the people strongly in the Delhi Assembly. “In democracy, raising the issues of the people in the Assembly is more important than the strength of the Opposition. Our legislative party may be small but our morale is very high,” he added.
