Launching a scathing attack on the AAP government for increasing the fee of the Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University-affiliated colleges, Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Vijender Gupta on Saturday demanded that the hike should be rolled back as it was bound to affect lakhs of students across the city.
Mr Gupta said that the government notification on fee structure has mentally disturbed students of Delhi and their parents. He said: “Thousands of poor students are forced to leave their studies in between due to their inability to pay enhanced fees. Parents are surprised by this order. They are even unable to think as to how they should manage extra Rs 40,000 to Rs 81,000 by March 22 to continue their studies.”
The BJP leader said 104 colleges are affiliated to the Indraprastha University. If there are about 1,000 students in each college, then the students will have to shell out close to Rs 624 crore by March 22. He said that director (higher education) Shiv Kumar through a notification has said that students taking admission in above mentioned courses will have to pay enhanced fees. “Under the notification, increased fee will have to be paid for 2013-2014, 2014-2015, 2015-2016, 2016-2017 from the year 2013 to current session year 2016-2017.
Mr Gupta said since exams were approaching, the notification to raise fees at this stage has disturbed the peace of mind of students and their parents. “Parents can’t even afford to take loans from the banks to deposit the fees of their ward. This decision of the Kejriwal government will hamper many students.”
Mr Gupta demanded that the CM should immediately roll back the fee hike order.
“If there is any statutory compulsion to deposit the fees, fee of all students should be deposited by the Delhi government to save the future of students being spoiled.” He said that the money government was spending on misleading advertisement should be used to deposit fees of the students to save their future.
Akhilesh, a MBA student from JIMS, said, “I am pursuing MBA which is a two year course and as per the circular order the fee hike is applied to four and five years courses but why are we also asked to pay increased fees. Most of us have come here to study by taking loans.”
Another student Swati Kapoor feels that the fee hike will put additional financial burden on her parents.
