BJP gears up for change ahead of civic polls

The BJP is gearing up for organisational change in the coming weeks with prospects of a new chief leading the team into municipal elections. The party is seeking a new lease of life with fresh leadership and ideas. Party workers are hoping to get an experienced chief to lead them in protests and not send them home after completion of the task.

According to sources, among the front-runners parliamentarians Parvesh Verma, Maheish Girri and Ramesh Bidhuri are the prime choices of party workers.

The cadre wants a chief to make them more relevant and counter the AAP so that the BJP fares well in the municipal elections, slated for 2017.

Apart from representing West Delhi Constituency in the Lok Sabha, Parvesh Verma has maintained a clean image and is said to be carrying ahead the legacy of his father, former Delhi CM Sahib Singh Verma. Similarly, Maheish Girri, national secretary of the BJP and East Delhi Lok Sabha member, is another non-controversial name known to the masses in the national capital. South Delhi MP Ramesh Bidhuri, a former party general secretary, is also a popular name among party workers.

Apart from the parliamentarians, there are chances of present party president Satish Upadhyay continuing as team leader as he is a sitting councillor from South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar, served as education committee chairman and later standing committee chairman in South Delhi Municipal Corporation.

Well-placed sources in the BJP said the party is looking for a leader like Dr Harsh Vardhan, who is known for his non-controversial image. However, there are minimal chances of Dr Harsh Vardhan taking charge of the city unit after carrying with him the portfolio of a Union ministry.

“At this juncture the party needs a powerful face that can sail us through municipal elections which are seemingly a huge challenge after the 2015 Assembly Polls, where the BJP was reduced to three in the 70-member Delhi Assembly,” the source said.

The procedure of appointing a new chief for the state unit will start only after the party announces that Mr Amit Shah will continue as BJP president. Union Minister Rajnath Singh stated that Mr Shah would continue as party chief. “Amit Shah will remain party chief for six more years. There is no hurdle,” he said.
