A city court on Thursday awarded seven-year jail to gangster Neeraj Bawana and also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on him for illegally possessing arms.
On August 31, the court had acquitted Bawana of attempt to murder and obstructing and assaulting a public servant and deterring him while discharging his duty.
He was convicted for illegal possession of arms, while the court acquitted his associate, Mohammed Rashid, of all charges.
In the present case, the special cell of the Delhi police arrested Bawana from Outer Delhi’s Kamruddin Nagar following an encounter in 2015. The police had claimed Bawana, in a bid to flee, had opened fire at them and they had to launch a counter attack in which he was arrested. It was the first time when Bawana was nabbed by the police. Baw-ana, who allegedly runs an extortion racket, shot to limelight when he had attacked a police team and got released his one of the aides, Amit alias Bhoora.
