The incident was reported from the Gorakhdham Express near Shakur Basti railway station when a group of robbers barged into the train and robbed about half-a-dozen passengers of cash and valuables on knifepoint.
The injured passengers were admitted to a hospital and are out of danger.
The incident took place at around 8.30 pm when the train had almost entered the station.
As the entire stretch is encroached, trains approaching the station usually crawl in at a very low speed.
“About four to five men got into the train with knives and sharp weapons. They started asking passengers to hand over whatever cash they had. Some people have alleged that their valuables were snatched. Two men, who were having cash worth '40,000 and '70,000, were robbed of their money. When they tried to protest, they were overpowered and stabbed. However, they managed to escape with minor injuries. An FIR has been lodged after a written complaint was received by three passengers,” said a senior police officer.
Within a few minutes, the robbers managed to jump off from the train as it was entering the station.
It was then that the passengers reported the matter to the police and the injured were taken for treatment.
DCP Railways Milind Dumbere said that a case of robbery has been registered and the matter is being investigated.
“There are no CCTV cameras at the station and therefore local staff and others are being questioned in order to be able to identify the miscreants,” he said.
A Railway Protection Force (RPF) official said that the perpetrators of the robbery could be from the slums located along the railway track near Shakur Basti because earlier also cases of snatchings and robberies with passengers had been reported from the same area.
“The train drivers have been instructed to slow down trains near Shakurpur Basti to avoid any casualty or accidents because of encroachments. The robbers have took advantage of the situation and boarded the train,” said a senior official with RPF.
