A security alert imposed at IGI Airport, following bomb threats in five Jet Airways flights. A Jet Airways flight from Delhi to Chennai was searched at IGI Airport on Tuesday evening after an anonymous caller reported that a bomb had been placed in the plane. The call regarding Flight 9W832 was received at around 4 pm, just before it was to take off with some 115 passengers.
“A thorough search was conducted in the plane” at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, deputy commissioner of police Dinesh Kumar Gupta said, adding that all the passengers had been evacuated and taken to a safe place.
The Jet Airways flight to Chennai from Delhi (9W 828) was diverted to Nagpur. The other Chennai flight (9W 832) is parked at the isolation bay of Delhi airport.
Jet Airways received threat calls for five of its flights out of Delhi on Tuesday leading to diversion of one and delay of the other. By the time the threat information was received, 9W 307 (Delhi-Dehradun), 9W 2657 (Delhi-Chandigarh) and 9W 2647 (Delhi-Gorakhpur) had landed at their respective destinations.
A Delhi police officer said ahead of Holi festival, security had already been increased at vital installations, important buildings, malls and crowded places in the city. The special cell and crime branch of the Delhi police have been briefed about the input separately, so that activities of gangs operating in and around the city and elements with suspected terror links can be monitored, said the police officer. The police is also ensuring that CCTV cameras at all places with high footfall, like popular markets in the city and Metro stations, are functional. Patrolling across the city has been intensified. The security at the Indira Gandhi International Airport has also been beefed up after the attacks in Belgium.
