The accident took place on Friday morning at around 5 am when Air India employee Shakambari Zutshi was going to IGI Airport to board a flight to Kolkata. On the way, when her cab reached NH-8 Rajokri flyover near Gurgaon border, a truck suddenly applied brakes and a speeding Toyota Innova behind the truck rammed into it.

Meanwhile, the Tata Indigo, in which Zutshi was sitting on the rear seat, also rammed into the Toyota Innova. The cab’s speed was very high and the driver could not apply brake on time.

“The incident happened between 4.30 am and 5 am on the Rajokri flyover. The truck driver, who was driving ahead of the two cars — Innova and Indigo — suddenly applied the brakes causing the Innova to ram into the truck and the Indigo to ram into the Innova,” said additional DCP-I (South) Nupur Prasad. Zutshi’s cab driver and two occupants of the Toyota Innova, including the driver, were injured in the accident, but Zutshi died on the spot. All the injured were rushed to a nearby hospital where Zutshi was declared brought dead. The condition of her cab driver was stated to be critical till late on Friday.

During investigation, the police discovered Zutshi’s husband Rajeev Dhar is undergoing treatment for cancer in Gurgaon’s Medanta Hospital. When the police informed him about his wife’s demise in the road accident, he gave the police approval for the post-mortem as he could not go there.

Meanwhile, Air India authorities said since Zutshi’s husband was being treated in hospital, she was only going on all short flights from Delhi so that she could spend maximum time with her husband. An Air India spokesperson expressed regret over the unfortunate incident and conveyed deepest condolences to the family. “We sincerely regret the unfortunate incident and express our deepest condolences to the family,” said the spokesperson.

A case has been registered against the driver of the truck, who is absconding. Investigation is underway to identify him based on the registration number of the truck that the driver left at the spot, the police said.
