A few months after the new academic session begins, Delhi University witnesses the upsurge of a political fever in the form of Delhi University Stud-ents’ Union elections every year. With the freshers coming in, the candidates for the upcoming elections have started mobilising their cadres to woo the newcomers.

For almost a decade, Dusu election has been a bipolar contest between two major political outfits — the BJP student wing Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Congress-affiliated National Student Union of India (NSUI). However, the year 2015 saw a pronounced transition from bipolar to tripolar election in Dusu with Chattra Yuva Sangharsh Samiti (CYSS), backed by AAP jumping into the bandwagon.

The freshers have always played an important role in the Dusu elections. Hence, the student organisations have started doing everything to take them into confidence. While all of them have set up help desk centres inside and outside the colleges for the freshers, organisations like the All-India Students’ Association (AISA) also protested on the first day of admissions against the online system which has been functioning very slowly and creating confusion among students.

Another student organisation, the Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS), also burnt the first cut off-list in the form of an effigy as a mark of protest against the discrimination done to the government school students in the university.

“We have set up help desks for students who are coming to the colleges with any kind of confusion with regard to the admission process. We have also engaged volunteers to help students in whatever way we can,” said an ABVP member.
