Led by the party’s women legislators, Aam Aadmi Party activists on Tuesday protested outside Union home minister Rajnath Singh’s residence against increase in incidence of crime against women and deteriorating law and order in the national capital.
The female AAP MLAs, Alka Lamba, Bhavana Gaud, Pramila Tokas, Sarita Singh, Vandana Kumari and Rakhi Birla, led the protesters towards Mr Singh’s residence and were detained by the Delhi police for about four hours.
“We had detained around 50 workers of AAP, including MLAs. They were protesting outside residence of Rajnath Singh. There were 35 women and 25 men who were detained at the Parliament Street police station. They were kept in detention for four hours between 12 to 4 pm. Later, they were set free,” Romil Baniya, additional DCP, said.
The AAP protesters wanted to meet the Union home minister, whose office had not confirmed any appointment. They were stopped and detained near Akbar Road by the Delhi police, which had made massive security arrangements and had installed barricades outside Mr Singh’s residence. Launching a scathing attack on the Modi government and Mr Singh, Ms Lamba said, “The home minister doesn’t have any time to meet elected women representatives of Delhi on increasing crimes against women. Mr Singh was at the BJP Parliamentary Board meeting and was not speaking to them about the brutal rape of a little girl,” Ms Lamba said.
The AAP has been attacking the Centre after the death of a 14-year-old dalit rape victim. The party said that while the Centre was prompt in making use of the Delhi police to arrest legislators, it does not show the same enthusiasm in dealing with the issue of women’s safety. AAP youth wing president Ankush Narang said women’s security is an issue that the party will never be silent about.
Meanwhile, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was providing security to his “friends” like Nita Ambani, leaving women in the national capital in a lurch. Mr Kejriwal’s latest swipe against Mr Modi came in a tweet after the Union home ministry decided to accord Y-category security cover to Ms Ambani, the wife of Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani.
“Women raped daily in Delhi. No security for them despite repeated requests. But PM providing security to his friends,” Mr Kejriwal said on Twitter.
