46 per cent turnout in Delhi Cantonment Board elections

A total of 64 candidates are in fray for eight seats across Delhi Cantonment with the Congress, the BJP and the AAP being the major political parties contesting the elections. Ward No. 4 Subroto Park recorded the lowest voter turn out at 25 per cent and Ward No. 7 recorded the highest turn out at 65 per cent.

An official said that Ward No. 2 recorded 46 per cent, Ward No. 3 registered 51 per cent, Ward No. 5 registered 58 per cent, Ward No. 6 saw a turnout of 39 per cent and Ward No. 8 recorded 59 per cent. “Counting of votes will take place on January 12,” returning officer M.S. Vats said.

Cantonment Board elections are being seen as a precursor to the Assembly elections through which the political parties will gauge the public mood.

Only two candidates, Badal Prakash and Rakesh Topwal, are in the fray from Ward No. 1. Kamal Sharma, who had served as a ward member in the previous Landour Cantonment Board, is vying for the post once again from Ward No. 2. Rival candidates Shiva, Mahesh Chandra and Tejpal Singh are banking on the anti-incumbency factor against Kamal Sharma.

In Ward No. 3, there are eight contestants Dhanendar Singh Pundir, Sushil Kumar, Jaswinder Singh, Harminder Singh, Mahipal, Sardar Singh, Anil Mall and Mohd Mahfooz. Maya, Pushpa Padyar and Nisha are contesting from Ward No. 4.

In Ward No. 5, Ramesh and Rajesh are the candidates and Vijay Lakshmi Rawat, Chandra Kala Sayana and Suman are contesting from Ward No. 6.
