A 21-year-old female engineering student allegedly committed suicide on Wednesday by jumping off the 17th floor of a highrise building as she was accused of stealing cosmetic items from a departmental store and feared her parents’ wrath. The police has booked four flatmates of the girl under the charge of abetment of suicide.
The deceased, Ritu Yadav, was a first-year engineering student. She used to stay at a rented accommodation on 14th floor in a residential society here with four other girls. On Wednesday morning, security guards of the society heard sound from parking area and when they rushed to check, they found a girl in a pool of blood.
“The security guards informed the police about the incident and rushed the victim to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead on arrival. Later, she was identified as Ritu Yadav. She had jumped from the roof of the building,” said Anil Pratap Singh, station house officer (SHO), Kasna police station.
The police said Ritu’s flatmates had revealed that a few days back an owner of departmental store had come to their flat and complained that Ritu had stolen some cosmetic goods from his shop and threatened file a police complaint against her. Ritu’s flatmates informed her parents about the shopkeeper’s complaint. On this, her parents scolded her and were scheduled to visit her on Wednesday.
“We have recovered a four-page suicide note from her flat in which she has accused her flatmates of informing her parents about the theft allegation, following which they decided to visit her. They were supposed to visit her on Wednesday,” said Mr Singh.
“Prima facie it looks like a case of suicide, however, we are investigating it from each aspect. We have not found any signs of scuffle inside the flat. We are also going through CCTV footage of the building. Even her flatmates got to know about the incident from the security guards of the society,” said Mr Singh.
The deceased hailed from Lucknow and had moved to the city about a year back. “The body was sent for postmortem and the report is awaited. We have informed the family members of the deceased about the incident. Body will be handed over to them once the postmortem is completed,” said Mr Singh.
