25 new schools to come up across capital

Deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia on Saturday said the Delhi government has nearly finished construction of 25 new schools in the capital, besides identifying 28 sites for new school buildings.

Deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia on Saturday said the Delhi government has nearly finished construction of 25 new schools in the capital, besides identifying 28 sites for new school buildings.

Mr Sisodia said the proposal for the construction on the identified sites has been sent to the Public Works Department. Eighteen Gram Sabha sites have been handed over the Directorate of Education (DoE), according to the government.

“Almost 16 lakh children are studying in Delhi government-run schools. Due to shortage of classrooms in some schools, more than 100 children sit in a single class and schools are being run in two shifts,” Mr Sisodia, who is also city’s education minister, said in the Delhi Assembly.

“By constructing new schools and more classrooms in existing schools, the government’s effort is to ensure a strength of 35-40 students in each class and a morning shift in schools that are operating two shifts,” he added.

Mr Sisodia said the construction of 8,000 clasrooms in existing government schools is under progress. At least a dozen schools are getting over 100 new classrooms each.

In the second phase, the government plans to construct 4,200 additional classrooms.

The 25 new schools are coming up in areas like Dwarka, Madanpur Khadar, Rohini, Kalkaji, GTB Nagar and I.P. Extension. For the proposed construction, the government has taken possession of Gram Sabha land in Jatkhore, Nizampur Rashidpur, Punjab Khore, Madanpur Dabas, Jaunti, Garhi Radhala, Ladpur, Kair and Samaspur Kalsa.

However, the government has only managed to spend Rs 234.53 crore on construction of the new school buildings against the plan outlay of Rs 1,464 crore in the current fiscal.
