The Delhi police has detained two men in connection with the brutal murder of a 42-year-old widow, Sunita, and her distant relative Rajesh Kumar, whose bodies were found at their residence in West Delhi’s Vikas Nagar on Saturday morning.
The detained persons are brothers-in-law of Sunita’s younger daughter Jyoti, who had objected to her mother’s relationship with Rajesh.
A senior police officer confirmed that Amit and Sumit, both in their twenties, were detained on Sunday. Amit is the brother of Jyoti’s husband and Sumit is Amit’s close friend.
Jyoti was married to a Haryana-based taxi driver over a year ago, but she had recently returned home following a marital discord with her husband.
The initial line of investigation focused on Jyoti’s husband, who blamed Sunita for their troubled married life.
The police said that Amit, in particular, had been objecting to Rajesh and Sunita staying together and had raised the issue with his sister-in-law and her mother Sunita.
They had been telling them that since Sunita was their relative, they thought her relationship with another man after her husband’s death was bringing disrepute to Jyoti’s husband’s side of the family as well, said the police.
The police claimed that the attackers had used a hammer, among other things, to inflict injuries on the two victims.
