Dangerously close to elimination, defending champions Sri Lanka are still looking to explain their unimpressive run in the ICC World Twenty20, and wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Chandimal said middle order woes had stymied their run this time.

Speaking ahead of their Super 10 game against England here on Saturday, Chandimal admitted, “We are struggling with the middle order. In big games, we don’t have the experience. But we need to put our hands up and perform.

“You cannot always say the team are in transition. We will give it our best shot in the next game,” Chandimal said.

He said Saturday’s match against England and thereafter South Africa would give them a chance to improve their record here.

“It’s all about the conditions. Wankhede was a good pitch while this one is slow. We feel we have a good chance,” he added.

Sri Lanka are playing here after a six-day break and Chandimal said it had helped the team to recover and plan.

“It was a really good break. We discussed went wrong in the two games we lost (against West Indies and England). We need to execute our plans and guys are looking forward to the match.”

Chandimal said they would look to Rangana Herath’s leadership with the ball against England who crumbled against Afghanistan’s spinners.

“Rangana Herath is a world class bowler. He can cause damage.

“Even South Africa are struggling against spinners. Vandersay is a surprise package and Sachithra Senanayeke is also good. Yes we expect big things from Rangana as he knows how to handle pressure,” said the stumper.
