We are fired up: Darren Sammy

The West Indies may be beset by controversies and look a depleted side in absence of mystery spinner Sunil Narine and champion all-rounder Kieron Pollard, but skipper Darren Sammy says they are ready

The West Indies may be beset by controversies and look a depleted side in absence of mystery spinner Sunil Narine and champion all-rounder Kieron Pollard, but skipper Darren Sammy says they are ready for their World Twenty20 opening clash against England here on Wednesday.

“We all are fired up. This is a format were we are confident in. It is always difficult to replace Narine, Pollard, Lendl Simmons and Darren Bravo. They are such quality players but then we have guys like Carlos Brathwaite, Evin Lewis, Ashley Nurse and Johnson Charles coming in who could have same impact. Yes we will miss them, but it will be opportunity for someone else to step up,” Sammy said.

“Every member in our squad comes in to play depending on the conditions, we all 15 are match winners. Chris (Gayle) is the most destructive batsman at the top and there is never too much pressure on him,” he said.

The West Indies enjoy good record over England but Sammy said they would not take an improved England side for granted.

England skipper Eoin Morgan warned the West Indies would have to encounter a England side with renewed energy.

“I think it feels different because we are a different group of players, it’s a new energy, it’s a exciting time for English cricket given the talent that we have in the group and the attitude in taking the game to the opposition, it totally feels different,” he said.
